The Great REX Race 2009

Another excellent event, where we navigated around the hidden depths of South Auckland and further south all the way out to the rugged West Coast.

We arrived at Castaways where the questions were marked and times recorded. Winner in the day was Peter & Barbara Clendon.  Then we enjoyed a fantastic lunch overlooking the beach. Nice way to spend a Sunday.

Annual Driver Training Day Pukekohe Race Track 2009

This year our luck with the weather ran out. Six years of fine weather was great, but today there was a storm. Lucky for us we had Subaru’s fantastic All Wheel Drive to get us around the track.

This year we dispensed with the braking exercises and had much more lapping in the form of Pursuit Lapping and a competitive full track slalom.

The winner this year was Ed Howitt with Steve Bond and Warren Hickford coming in second and third respectively. Thanks to CASTROL for supporting us by providing the EDGE range of oil for prizes.

Drag Day at Meremere 2009

We were blessed with a perfect day for Drag racing with zero degrees at 9am in Meremere. The dragstrip was covered in fog and shivering car enthusiasts keen to put thier cars to the test.

The Jaguar club had invited around 17 car clubs to the event and this meant there were loads of different cars to check out, and some very unique ones too.  The no runs under 13 seconds rule meant there were a lot of fair races with no heavily modified cars running. It was a rare opportunity to race our Subaru’s against Porsche, Jaguar, Holden, BMW, and various other makes down the 1/4 mile.

Once the fog cleared the racing began after each car was scrutineered, cars queued up in pairs alongside the strip, by the time we reached the front you could be up against anyone due to the curve in the line. Sometimes we asked politely if we could pair up with other club members for bragging rights  :)

Overall the Subarus performed very well amongst all the euro cars mainly due to the 4wd launches that left most other cars behind from the outset, so it was a good day for us all.  Soon I will post the best times by each member that raced on the day. All those who raced, please send your names, any photos you took and your best times to craig@wrxsticlub.co.nz

Show & Shine 2009

Our 6th Annual Show & Shine again proved to be a great day with a good turn out of very shiny Subaru’s. As usual we met at Wingers in greenlane and had a coffee and nibbles while mingling with new members and old alike. Once we were given our secret pace notes we left in convoy behind Peter again in his V8 (9ish) STi. We all met up in an empty carpark just past westgate for some photos and to keep the convoy together, then it was off again. Peter took us through some great roads and lovely contryside until we arrived outside Shakespear Park for another photo shoot. Then it was into the park for a final clean of the cars and the show and shine began.

The standard was very high again and the expert judges had their hands full deciding. This year it was Craig in his V10 STi that took the win, followed by xxxxxxxx, then in 3rd was xxxxxxx. The fantastic prizes were kindly supplied by Turtlewax this year with some very flash grooming gear.

Show & Shine 2008

Our 5th Annual Show & Shine again had perfect weather. We met at Cafe Winger and had a chance to catch up with each other before Keith from the Committee released the top secret pace notes which were under lock & key until the event. And the route he planned was excellent as we transversed over the undulating back roads of West Auckland behind Peter in his V8 STi on route to the Hibicus Coast. We arrived at our seaside venue at Shakespear Park, next to the water which was breathtaking.

The show & shine comp was again sponsored by MOTHERS who provided some fantastic prizes. Winner this year was Darryl with his 22B STi, second was Matt with his STi V8 Spec C, third was James with his STi V8 and fourth was Edward with his STi V7.

Meremere Drags & Annual Show & Shine

We hired the entire Drag Strip for our first annual Drag Meet. We had a good turnout with many modified members cars ready to be put thought their paces. The morning session was spent doing practice runs which was alot of fun and some great times also being produced.

In the afternoon, we entered into the competitive part of the day - The Eliminations. This was where the fastest cars continued to be paired up until a winner was found. Gone were the previous fastest times ran in the morning, this time all that counted was your time in the elimination. Winner was Hayley. Second was Jason. Third was Rusty. The fastest time for the day was 12.06 by Jason.

The day also doubled as our Annual Show & Shine - Special Expert Judge Tony Tan did a great job of judging the entrants, while MOTHERS gave us excellent prizes as usual. Winner for the second year in a row was David with his mint STi, Second was Dipesh with his stunning modified V5 Coupe running V7 gear. Third was Martin.

A great day, especially the weather. Actually if it was colder I am sure the times would have been even more impressive, with most cars running low 13’s. Who said Rexs can’t Drag!! Roll on next year. Thanks to Trevor from Meremere Raceway for running a great day and to Colin, Waiana and Joshua for running the Drags.

World Rally Championchip New Zealand 2006

The Phase “No one gets you closer to the WRC than the WRX STi Club” rang true this year as we furthered our official involvement with this event. This year we went one up where members got the opportunity to go inside the Subaru World Rally Team Service Tent. For those members who took Thursday (Shakedown) off to do this it was well worth it. We all got the opportunity to meet Petter Solberg, Chris Atkinson and Valentino Rossi. Also we were taken for a tour of the inner workings of the team and had the opportunity to talk first hand to those on the ground for the team.

Another aspect to our representation at the Rally was our Possum Bourne stand, where we had the Possum Bourne WRC 1999 replica on show. The interest from the public, teams and the media was huge. The Team Director from the Subaru World Rally Team came over to view the car and he liked it, so the car with him talking about our beloved Possum Bourne, is to feature on a documentary on Subaru to be shown on Quantas and Air New Zealand - a proud moment indeed.

The WRX STi Girls were on our stand selling Possum Bourne merchandise for the Bourne Family Trust, it was pleasing for that our lovely ladies were able to assist.

Dunlop Targa Weekend 22nd & 23rd October 2006

Sunday morning saw 7 Club cars turn up for our display with Peter C, Dave C, Allan B, Matt L, Duncan L, Martin G, and Jeremy T. There was organized chaos as Targa cars were constantly coming out of scrutineering and joining the display in the main street. The American Classic car people had a street to themselves to display and run their Rock ‘n Roll show.

Cars of note were the Ford GT40 of Steve Millen, Ex Brock 7 litre Monaro (pure racecar) Ford RS 200 and numerous other creations.

The highlight of the day was the drive through the very twisty prologue stage in Hunua. We were invited to run in the middle of the Narva field because we had faster cars than some of the competitors. A brisk run was enjoyed by all ( Peter wanted to go faster than the Honda S2000 that was holding him up).

Monday dawned to rain!!!!!

Despite this a smaller contingent of Duncan L, Peter C, Dave C, Rusty H arrived on time at midday to a very sodden Pukekohe Raceway. Darryl J. arrived a little later with his new “toy” WRC replica done out on official Possum Bourne colours with Peggy Bourne as driver. Because of the weather there was total confusion as to running times. At 2.30 we were rushed out onto the track to do our laps. Again great fun but with a “Pace Car” in the field to keep speeds down a bit. Peggy Bourne had various of her children doing laps with her and was enjoying herself. Unfortunately she missed a second opportunity because of a mix up with marshals and the early arrival of the main Targa Cars.

I believe that we presented a good image for ourselves with the organizers and look forward to similar opportunities in the future.

Great Rex Race & Run October 2006

While the 2006 Amazing Rex Run / Treasure Hunt (the club’s third running of this particular event) was greeted by an overcast day, club members arrived in numbers to be challenged by clues, drive and enjoy good food and company at the final checkpoint of Ascension in Matakana.

After mixing ‘n mingling at Wingers in Greenlane, members were given their instructions, and shortly after 10am, were sent away at 90 second intervals. Crews were handed their packs as they were ready to leave to ensure that there was no advantage for teams leaving further down the order, giving everybody the same amount of time to work out the route to the first checkpoint.

The packs consisted of 6 photos showing clues that could only be answered by going to the site indicated. Once there, a question needed to be answered. Incorrect or missing answers were penalised at 25 minutes each so it was important that each crew visited each of the sites.

The six checkpoints took the members to Cockle Bay, Maraetai, Clevedon, Ardmore Airport, Auckland Airport and Northcote before making the journey north to Matakana.

As the crews safely arrived at Ascension, their arrival time was compared with their departure time, and the difference calculated to determine travelling time. Added to this were any penalties for any wrong or missing answers. At the end of day, the results were:

  • 1st Place: David & Mel
  • 2nd Place: Peter & Barbara
  • 3rd Place: Rusty & Lynn
  • 4th Place: Ian & Colleen

We’ll spare the last person home the indignity of being named - Pete!

After a well deserved lunch, members were invited to talk to other members about their cars, covering length of ownership, modifications and planned enhancements, with a few members being able to show and advise members on some of the options and who to see to get them done.

Thanks to Ascension for providing an exclusive parking area outside the restaurant and providing good food and service, and to Wingers Greenlane for use of their site and facilities, and for the great prizes.

Driver Training Day 2 July 2006 Pukekohe International Raceway

This was the fourth time we have been at Puke for our now famous Driver Training Day. The perfect mix of training, fun and fast track action. This year it has taken on an Advanced theme as our club drivers have improved over the previous years.

This year the competitive slalom was heavily modified, now on the back straight, around the hairpin through a chicane & a 180 turn in the pit entry and back through the course again. 2 runs, only the second one counted. Shaun got a fastest time in the first session, but it was Darryl who got the fastest time in the second session which was the one that counted.

After the slalom the fun got even better, with lapping starting before lunch. We drove the track in pursuit formation following our instructor Mike Eady who was just fresh back from a class win in the Nuremburg 24 Hour Race - his lines were fantastic to follow. After that, helmets on and free lapping. Everyone did very well, no spills at all. Times were respectable and speeds fantastic, with back straight speeds reaching 220kph.

REX TECH 2006 Dyno Day

Our third REX TECH Dyno Day was held at Gary Capper Performance (GCP) on Sunday 21 May on a clear, crisp day in Pukekohe. The event was also sponsored by Castrol and Mothers’, who along with GCP, donated some fantastic prizes.

Thanks also to Seaview Meats for the tasty (and popular!) sausages.

Performance TV also made an appearance to film some of the proceedings. Club President Darryl was interviewed about his views on Subaru, so watch out for that. (Darryl was also asked to provide commentary on the WRX STi S204 which should also make interesting viewing).

A fine turnout saw around 20 cars arrive with 13 lined up to hit the dyno.

All of the cars had varying degree of modifications, with stock machines revving just as hard as the modified. As expected, the modified cars gave better results but there were a few surprises along the way, such as a standard WRX with some STi components and after market chip putting out over 200kW at the wheels.

Gary and his team competently put each car through their paces, providing the group with feedback on each car, explaining what was happening and providing suggestions on changes and improvements. His knowledge and experience made the whole event very valuable, with a number of members staying behind at the conclusion to get individual advice on how to enhance their own pride and joy.Winners on the day were:

  • Rusty, highest output on the day (233kW)
  • Ben, lowest output of the day who was still there at the end (175kW)
  • Bruce, winner of the prize for hot laps around Pukekohe
  • Ingo, winner of the prize to be a co-pilot in the Day Night Rally sprint through Maramarua Forest with Dylan Turner

Annual Show n’ Shine 25 February 2006

This was the 4th annual Club Show & Shine, and this year was again sponsored by MOTHERS Polishes & Waxes.

25 cars headed off from home base WINGER SUBARU, via our carefully planned and pace noted route on SH 16 to Shakespere Park in the Whangaparoa Peninsula.

While we had our BBQ lunch courtesy of SEAVIEW MEATS, our VIP judge Paul from Wingers did the rounds inspecting a number of WRX variants. It was pleasing to see the club members who were doing last minute cleaning when they arrived were placed first and second, being winner David Clendon and second place, Matt Willams. All winners walked away with prizepacks courtesy of MOTHERS and CASTROL.

Christmas Function 2005

For the second year we went to Hotel Du Vin near Maramarua. Last years event was great & everyone enjoyed the country club grounds the Hotel had to offer.

But the bigger draw card was the fantastic drive to the location. This year Ceri & Katherina Lewis planned a slightly altered & longer route across the coast with some fast driving roads & spectacular views. Approx 25 cars in convoy was an impressive site as we again parked in front of our private function room.

Sadly this will be the last year we go to this location, as the food did not meet our expectations - where next ? Be there for the 2006 function

Amazing Rex Race II 30 October 2005

Sunday 30th October saw the running of the second annual Amazing Rex Race. After spending a bit of time checking out the new Ver 10 STi at Winder Subaru, contestants headed of bound for Miranda Hot Springs via the back roads of Manurewa, Ardmore and the Hunua ranges. The weather looked after us well, with warm overcast conditions for the drive and the sun came out for the picnic and swim at the hot pools. All the co-drivers seemed to survive better than last year with no-one complaining about being car sick at the end. This was probably due to there being several more running locations (which some embraced… and some didn’t…!!!), giving everyone as chance to get some fresh air and stretch the legs. And hopefully everyone took the chance to take in some of the great scenery that these locations had to offer.
The competition was very close this year with most cars coming in with 10 minutes of each other.

But congratulations go to Peter & Barbara who came in first with a time of 119 min 41 sec. For their effort’s they took away a bottle of Castrol R oil and cap. Second place went to Keith & Kara and their newest family member Emma (congratulations guys!), with a time of 121 mins 23 sec. And they were closely followed by Nigel & Rusty with 121 mins 34 secs.

Better get training for next year…

Review of 2006 STi V10

Darryl & Ceri from the committee had the pleasure of driving the new STi recently. Who better to review the new car than a couple of Subaru enthusiasts.

Ceri has owned among other WRX’s a V8 STi and currently has a V8 STi Spec C. Darryl has driven almost every version of WRX and STi from V1 to V9 and currently owns an STi 22B. I think we are well qualified to report on the latest offering from Subaru !!

Obviously the first things that grabs you are the looks, totally different from past offerings & reflecting the signature of the new designer drafted in from Alfa Romeo. Love it or hate it, the look is extreme and very aggressive - just what an STi should look like.

Specially the grill now boasts a small mouth with two vanes either side, the bonnet scope ha s shrunk in size from the V9 and the rear spoiler looks similar to the WRC inspired item on the previous model. New is the roof diffuser and the diffuser under the bumper. Both items will keep you firmly on the ground as you approach the top speed of approx 240kph. Interestingly the speedo now goes up to 260kph, although we did not achieve such speeds on our test !!

If you haven’t heard the STi is now 2.5 litre, having been made more similar to the Australian and USA spec car. However a very reliable source at Subaru tells me that the NZ spec car still has more power than its Ausy cousin.

A drive of the car is telling with a far smoother drive across the rev range, which results in the first impression that this car is slower than the previous model. However is the delivery of the power that is pleasing. You are now gently pushed back into the seat, instead of having your neck snapped as you go through the gears (which I kinda like). Far less brutal than the 22B and Spec C and perhaps a little too refined like the new Evo, but far easier to live with for city drives.

Improvements to the steering have had effect, resulting in a more precise feel, however still not as crisp as the Spec C, but an improvement on previous model.

Overall we were impressed and consider the power and the handling to be an evolution, however the looks are a definate revolution. If you want one, better get your order in quick, stocks as usual are limited !!

DRIVER TRAINING TRACK DAY ? PUKEKOEHE RACEWAY 30 JULY 2005

This was the 3rd year we have run this event & amazingly the weather again turned out to be crisp & sunny ? perfect conditions for our turbo charged vehicles. With the track recently resurfaced the track conditions made for some pleasant driving. Also the format of the day was improved from prior years, making it more flowing & more fun.

Again the slalom was hotly contested this year with the following top times:

  • Peter 30.52
  • Shaun 34.00
  • Aaron 31.93
  • Ceri 29.67

All the above got prizes courtesy of WINGER SUBARU with the grand winner Ceri getting the CASTROL RS oil pack. Well done Ceri for putting in a stunning time!! Most improved driver for the day was Rachael Meldrum winning a calendar/hat prize.

The cars also benefited from the WYNNS RACE OCTANE BOOST, keeping the motors in one piece as the cars were put through their paces. WINGER SUBARU pit crew was also on hand, providing support for the vehicles, thanks to Aaron & Brad for coming along.

DYNO DAY 25 JUNE 2005

This year with no models from Nitro appearing the focus was on finding out the power of the Rexes, and some serious chat over the pipping hot Sausages on the club BBQ.

An outstanding effort was made on the day by Kish P, dialing in with nearly 50kws at the wheels more than any other club car.

A big thanks to SEAVIEW MEATS for supplying the sauages and to CASTROL for suppling the first prize.

The results:

  • V3 STi 250kw - Kish
  • V8 STi 206kw - Roger
  • V7 STi 197kw - Cole
  • V7 STi 194kw - Rusty
  • V7 STI 193kw - Steven
  • V8C STi 192kw - Peter
  • V7RA STi 182kw - James
  • V8 STi 178kw - Keith
  • V5 STi 177kw - Mark
  • V5 STi 176kw - Ben
  • V6RA STi 162kw - Rach
  • V4 STi 156kw - Matt

OPENING OF ADVANCED AUTOMOTIVE

You’ve gotta support thoses who give support you right ?? And that’s exactly why the club was there to help with the opening of member Lee Sutton’s new business. Lee however is nothing new to the performance car scene, having managed former company Advanced Imports for several years. This new company however has taken things to the next level, and judging by the amazing setup this is the place to go for the best car gear.

Our own Nitro Model was there persuading punters to buy our club calendar, as was a few of the club cars including a STi 22B, 2x STi spec C V8, STi V7 RA.

PROPECIA RALLY NZ 2005 WRC

This was the first time the club was involved in the NZ round of the WRC thanks to the forward thinking vision of Rally NZ boss Gary Upson, who invited us to set up displays throughout the Rally.

A small crew (Darryl J, David C, Peter T) headed up to Paparoa for the Shakedown on Thursday to scope out the best spot for our display. Then early on Friday morning we met at Rally HQ (Langham Hotel) & headed up to the Paparoa Service Park. There we set up our display which included not just one but two 22B STi wide body coupes, a spec C STi, a Version 9 STi and some spectacular Version 7’s. As the public headed into the service park they wandered past our display. The response was very pleasing as an estimated 500 people or so took the opportunity to stop, look & take photos of the cars. Many were interested in having a chat about the cars & we were pleased to meet such rally enthusiasts as our cobbers from the NSW WRX Club in Australia. Also people from France, Italy, Japan, USA & of course NZ went through the display.

We should also be featured on TV3 at some stage as the backdrop to the wacky STi-ATV quad bike come car (see the pics).

On Saturday evening we re-grouped at the Manuaku Super Stage to set up another display & despite the weather l ooking ominous the crowds were huge. Again interest was very strong in the display, especially the opportunity for fans to see the 22B STi in the flesh. A highlight of the evening was seeing Peggy Bourne come over to our display & get some photos taken with the crew. She also re-affirmed her support of the club & Possum as our Honorary Club Patron, saying that Possum was always behind us. A very humbling moment indeed.

Hopefully next year we will be back again at the Rally allowing Rally fans to see the cars up close & personal. Again special thanks to Gary Upson for running a great Rally & allowing us to be involved.

And thanks to Darryl from all the club members who got to benefit from the VIP car passes and a spectacular viewing point at the Super Special at Manukau.

2005 SHOW & SHINE ANNUAL FAMILY PICNIC

A picture perfect day is the best way to describe this year’s event. This event has been running for 3 years & the standard of the cars has improved dramatically over the 3 years. This year sponsored by MOTHERS POLISHES the event took on new meaning in terms of its importance on the club calendar. The standard of prizes provided by MOTHERS was fantastic - their new product the WAX-ATTACK POLISHER is simply stunning.

25 cars headed off from WRX STi Club HQ - WINGER SUBARU, through an extremely interesting drive veering through the west Auckland back roads & ending up in Silverdale on our way to the Whangaparoa Peninsula. A few got lost, which made for some interesting navigation, but all made it to the end point within 5 minutes of each other. We were greeted by the hard working set-up crew who had the stunning waterfront location looking very impressive with tents & banners from our sponsors.

A tasty lunch was had thanks to SEAVIEW MEATS who donated their top quality flavored sausages to complement the lunch brought by everyone.

Special guest judge for the second year running was Aaron Robinson from WINGER SUBARU. The judging was performed with meticulous precision and the placings were as follows:

  • 1ST Place - David P (STi V7)
  • 2ND Place - Peter M (STi V7)
  • 3RD Place - Darryl J (22B)
  • 4TH Place - Ceri L (STi V8 Spec C) tied with David C (STi V3)

Other placings will be updated as they come to hand.

REV MAGAZINE was on hand to document the event, so look out for a write-up on the club in their next sizzling issue.

EVENT OF YEAR REX RUN - 28 NOVEMBER 2004

A fitting way to end the year was for the club to go up market & dine in style at the Hotel Du Vin Country Club just south of the Bombays. We started out at our local meeting point WINGER SUBARU where there is always time for a chin wag & a cappuccino.

25 cars & about 50 people headed off in relatively good time via a special secret route through the Hunua Gorge. The roads were undulating (bumpy) to say the least & quite challenging so as to keep the interest of the driver & any passengers. Due to the pace of our cars we arrived at the location 20 minutes early and we were locked out until they had finished setting the tables!

As usual we had prime parking in front of the vineyard, where our Rexs were on display for all to see, & of course our own private function room.

Club President Darryl gave an end of year summary of all the events throughout the year & special thanks were conveyed to the sponsors, the committee (Colin & Charlotte, Ceri & Katherina, Jenny & Rodney) & 2 special people from principle sponsor WINGER SUBARU (Andrew & Aaron).

We then were allowed in where we had a sumptuous lunch of Christmas fare & a relaxed time now that the formal stuff was out of the way. Spot prizes of a club sweatshirt and Rally team hat were kindly donated by Winger Subaru. The three winners were Peter Clendon, Pete Lawrence and Jeanette Sutton.

Afterwards members had time to enjoy the activities such as pentanque, croquet, romantic bush walks, mountain biking, tennis, pool, spa, wine tasting etc. Basically a very high class affair. We will be back next year !!

Driver Training Day - 31 July 2004

The Driver Training Day for 2004 was the second time we have been to Pukekohe. The day was a picture perfect spring type of day ie. cool & sunny ? perfect conditions for racing or “training”.
The format for the day was improved from the previous year with feedback from members who had done the event last year being vital. We spent a lot more time in the car and it felt like we got more value for money for the modest fee we paid.
The morning was spent in building our skills for the afternoon, with the group being split in into 2, with one focusing on the S-Bend techniques and the other on Hair-Pin cornering with the back straight shalom to wet the appetite.
The afternoon started with the competitive shalom, winners were John Mcfetridge, Graham Watson, and Shiki Nakazawa. Then 2 groups performing a pursuit run with our race driver instructors leading us around the track so we could get the feel for the corners and speeds.
The next and always the most anticipated was the free lapping. You, your car, a helmet and the most fun you can have with your pants on, to quote our legendary club patron Possum Bourne.
Thanks to Aaron Robinson, Service Manager from WINGER SUBARU for being on site with his service van and knowledge and advice to our members. We could not wish for a better Pit-Crew Chief!! Also thanks to our sponsor WINGER SUBARU for putting on the lunch and providing the prizes as well.
A post event prize has also been awarded to Jenny Wallace for being the only female with enough balls (pardon the expression) to participate. Next year more ladies please!!

Grasskana - 28 March 2004

We all gathered again on a crisp sunny Sunday morning for the inaugural club Grasskana. The setting was a gently sloping rather large field neighbouring the North Shore Aerodrome. Event organisers Mark Christensen and Lee & Jeanette Sutton did an excellent job of organising the day. This included Mark spending hours on a ride-on mower carving out the fast & challenging track !!
Words cannot do justice to how much fun it is to “get it sideways” on the grass. Its all about pushing the limits in a safe & fun setting. The precision of SUBARU ALL WHEEL DRIVE and the sound of that BOXER engine cutting through the field let you know what it would be like to be Possum, Petter or Tommi, well for a minute anyway!! A few lost it around the track, but that’s what its all about - no injuries or majors.
Times improved as participants continued to have sessions around the track. After lunch the track was changed from a fast Autocross like track to a figure eight design. Mark Lewis showed his awesome skills by producing winning times for both track 1 and track 2. With Tim Nicholls coming closely behind (where were you Kyra ??).
Thanks to WINGER SUBARU for providing the fantastic Prodrive T-Shirts for the prizes. Given the success of this event, it is already confirmed for next year.

Shine & Show - 22 February 2004

Bad weather ?? What bad weather ?? - Our Annual Show N Shine held on Sunday 22 February was blessed with a fantastic sunny day as we gathered at WINGER SUBARU to prepare for our convoy up to Whangaparoa via a different route through deep West Auckland.

25 or so cars, many gleaming after having many hours of loving TLC graced the WINGER SUBARU service lane & as usual the sight of 25+ WRX’s in convoy was impressive. We headed out the North Western Motorway to Shakespear Park via the less busy roads of Riverhead & Coatesville. I know in the front pack of cars we had a fun drive (read FAST) through the windy roads between State Highway 16 & State Highway 1.

As we arrived at our destination we encountered the interest of the long arm of the law, & after a brief discussion with the officers I now know why they seem to focus on WRX’s - they simply want them as Police cars !!

We were met up there by the hard working set up crew who had the BBQ’s fired up & the tents in place. Our special guest/technical expert judge, Aaron Robinson, Service Manager from WINGER SUBLAB performed the judging in meticulous fashion & the winner for a second year running was Graham Beazley (1993 WRX), second place Peter Macrae (V7 STi) & third place Brett Thom (V1 STI). Congratulations to all the winners.

Many of the club members used the opportunity to relax, which was perfect for a lazy Sunday arvo. Thanks very much to our own club members for making the day special, specifically:

Kazu (For supplying the meat), David & Peter (Our own MAD STi butchers), Colin & Charlotte, Peter & Robyn, Peter & Ange, Roger E, & all the club members who brought food for the day - a great team effort from a great group of members.

Eat, Drive & Be Merry - 7 December 2003

In keeping with the time of the year our latest Rex Run had a Christmas theme with the emphasis on Driving rather than Drinking.

We meet at our usual location, Winger Subaru Greenlane, for coffees & some pre-drive chat & then convoyed through the heavy Christmas traffic via a special route off the main roads to our final location which was the classy Ascension Vineyard in Matakana.

The roads once off the motorway were very excellent (read windy & fast) and our 28 car convoy had the locals in the little towns we passed through very excited - our pleasure to make their day. Thanks to Dave Crisp & his “Mega Rex” for coming up with the route & leading the convoy.

Once at our venue we parked in a huge semi circle around our own outside area where 56 of us enjoyed some Christmas fare in the steaming hot weather. Oh & by the way it rained again, sorry to everyone who spent Saturday cleaning their cars, hopefully we’ll get it right for our next event.

The draw for the club raffle was done with a massive $500 worth of prizes. Ist place was Colin Harvey taking the Rally Team Jacket from Winger Subaru & the Castrol RS Oil from Castrol, 2nd place was Mark Lewis with a choice of $100 of speakers from Rapid Radio or $100 gift voucher from Techbooks & 3rd prize was Gerard Blokker with the Prodrive T from Winger Subaru.

There was also several spot prize draws with the winners answering questions about our sponsors & the website. Thanks to Wingers & Advanced Imports for the prizes. Good to see our members are supporting our sponsors.

As if that was not enough there was also the club prize giving which was very rushed due to time. It was good to meet many new members & pleasing to see the long time members getting involved with the running of the event. A great end to a busy year.

End of Winter Rex Run (Renamed Wild & Windy Rex Run !)-28 September 2003

We met at Wingers Greenlane, a huge turnout & another record for the club despite the weather - 31 cars and 62 people. Thanks to Winger Subaru for providing food & drinks before we departed on the journey.

What a day, what a lot of rain & wind, I mean a lot. Ever see 31 Rexs swimming ?? Well thats how bad it was. A credit to the cars though, the All Wheel Drive got us safely to our secret location. Well almost all of us. Member Woozel (name changed to protect his identity) had an “off” on the way, causing some damage to the the otherwise mint STi hatch. For his efforts he was awarded the “Dough” award which he accepted graciously. Tim Nicholls & Kyre scored the other spot prize.

The secret location ? Formosa County Club via some seriously windy driving roads on the east coast. We had our own room overlooking the water & Rangitoto - well it was there, but we could not see it due to the hurricane passing over head !!

Most of the event was spent inside, eating, talking & drinking while we got to know each other. We had plenty of new keen members at this event, & the usual faithful crew. The future of the club looks bright with the growth of the membership base to 77 memberships or about 150 bodies.

There was a good variety of New Zealand’s best WRX & STi machinery, including Brendan’s 1 d ay old STi V8 and Bill’s mint STi 22B.

DRIVER TRAINING DAY-26 JULY 2003

“”"AWESOME, AMAZING, VALUABLE, LOVED IT, MOST FUN I’VE HAD IN YEARS, THE BEST EVENT EVER, FANTASTIC, CAN’T WAIT TILL WE DO IT AGAIN, MORE MORE MORE”"”

Some of the comments received from participants of the club’s first Driver Training Day at Puke. The weather was perfect for a track day - sunny & a bit crisp which was great to keep those Intercoolers working well.

The day started off with the 22 participants getting some tuition from well known race car driver Mike Eady on skills required to handle powerful cars such as ours. Then on to some braking & swerving exercises to wet our appetites. NEXT was the only competitive event of the day, where the front straight was set out slalom style, with the objective to perform this test in the quickest possible time. The crowd was treated to some interesting displays of control, or lack of it in my case !!

From there we all had a great lunch, but from the food left over I suspect everyone was too excited to eat. WHY ? Because the afternoon sessions were the jewel of the day - the lapping. All cars were divided into two groups to ensure safety & it became a job of follow the leader as the instructors jumped from car to car showing us the correct cornering lines. After both groups performed this, & the cars had cooled down it was time for the fast laps. Helmets on, no instructors, 10 cars on the track at a time - PRICELESS !! This was what we had all been waiting for, this was the chance to test our abilities & those of the cars. This I will remember for a long long time.

Anyway, there were no incidents, all were very well behaved & Mike Eady said he wishes all groups were like this. Thanks to WINGER SUBARU for donating the prizes for various parts of the day. Roll on next Track Day……..

ANNUAL KART CHAMPS - 18 MAY 2003

The keen or was it the crazy turned out at the Auckland Raceway in Henderson (The best Karting Venue around) for some full on Karting action. Those that came got X-treme value for money as club member & owners Scott & Rochelle treated us to so much racing that many were pleading for it to stop, due to their bodies not being able to handle any more !! (seriously).

There were of-course the obligatory pile ups, but all in all the racing was clean, fast & fun - motorsport was winner at the end of the day. The crew was divided into 2 groups with every MAN for themselves. (No ladies were racing this time, despite my offer to join them in a ladies race). Winners were Colin Harvey & Freddy Lee, with Mark Christensen getting the fastest lap time. Prices & glory were heaped upon these winners.

For me the best bit was still to come, the FOOD. Rochelle outdid herself with some awesome salads & a top-notch BBQ. Was a good chance to swap war stories & shoot the breeze.
